Assalamualaikum, last week 30 october 2008 Canonical ltd have released Ubuntu 8.10 or known as codename "Intrepid Ibex", while this release is seem similar to those 6 month cycle production release like the predecessor, this release include several major improvement and variant, among the improvement are : 1) 3G/HSDPA module out-of-the-box support (Sierra Wireless, Globetrotter, Huwawei, Sony Ericsson etc).
2) X.Org (multiple-display in higher resolution, hot pluggable input device). 3) Integrated and automated network switching between WiFi,bluetooth,3G for always-on connectivity. 4 ) OpenMP compilation support (GCC 4.3.x) for multiple core and CPU utilisation. 5 ) USB Ubuntu 8.10 startup drive installer (for nettop with no CD-ROM drive) Ubuntu have released another supported variant of ubuntu which is Ubuntu for LPIA (Low Power Intel Atom), this variant is intended for mobile internet device - MID and support touch screen and stylus. Mean while it is a good improvement over the predecessor, it is not a LTS (Long Term Support) version mean it is supported for only for 18 month only. So here are my recommended choice of ubuntu variant for selection: 1. Ubuntu 8.04.1 (Hardy Heron) suitable for Enterprise Desktop and Server due to its long term support for desktop edition & server edition (3 & 5 years) 2. Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) 64-bit Desktop is suitable for current and latest laptop and desktop user (limited to certain model due to driver issues) 3. Kubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) for people who want desktop closer to XP / Vista 4. Xubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) 32-bit recommended for nettop / netbook 5. Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) MID (LPIA) recommended for tablet / mini so which one are your colour and flavour?
